- We talked about these beauties on the SLEEPER Gear Drum History Podcast episode! Check out the episode if you get a chance. These hihats are so underrated.
- For many years these were the THINNEST HIHATS Paiste offered!! Hell, they may still be the THINNEST hihats Paiste ever produced.
- How thin? 598 and 690 grams. On 14s”. And these are the rare early version with the engraved logo.
- These plays like Paiste made Trans Stamp 1940s Zildjians. Whispy, ultra-light, and airy sounding.
- 598 is really damn thin. Much thinner than any 14s offered today.
- And if you’ve been keeping score at home then you know that the Paiste 404s were some of the MOST underrated cymbals they ever made.
- This pair is very early too - before the serial #s appeared on the 404s. Engraved.
- 404s are like the foul-mouthed cousin to the Giant Beat. Same alloy, same THIN weight with great response, but surprisingly more complex - a bit dirtier sounding. Which is damn nice because everything Paiste is so fastidiously clean.
- Well, these have a pinch of organicness that eludes Paistes.
- Ultra-Light, airy, whispy, delicately complex, incredibly responsive. Very nice warm CHUP tone like vintage hats of yore.
- Very low to medium volume, incredible with brushes, they sing with a light touch. Amazing for recording. Total Aaron Sterling or Steve Jordan very musical vibe.
- Good shape with a nice patina. A few typical dents and scratches on the bell (typical because they’re so thin.) Regular use but no cracks. 40 years old and mellowed beautifully.
- Nothing like them in the Paiste catalog today.
